This program provides a more in-depth review of domestic hot water system for commercial building. We will review, design and evaluate the domestic hot water system/s for a couple of building. Doing a complete domestic hot water design from a few different boiler system types and design methods. We will also look at the implications that different codes can have on designed systems as well as reviewing and discussing coordination between trades.
The section will quickly review the basics of domestic hot water system.
Content Outline: Basic of Domestic Hot Water System – 2 Hours
Learning Objectives:
- Review the code requirements of domestic hot water systems.
- Review the different types of water heaters/boilers typically used in commercial buildings.
- Review the basic pipe sizing methods domestic hot water.
- Review the different methodologies used in designing domestic hot water systems.
The section will review Building #1 and design the domestic hot water equipment and coordination of spacing requirements.
Content Outline: Equipment Sizing and Selection – 1.5 Hours Equipment Layout – 0.5 Hour Domestic Hot Water Piping Layout and Sizing – 1.5 Hour
Learning Objectives:
- Properly size domestic boilers/water heaters.
- Properly size domestic hot water piping.
- Properly sizing natural gas system to serve gas fired equipment.
- Properly select and size the domestic heating water equipment to fit specific projects.
- Correctly coordinate space allocations within the building.
- Understand how to correctly size domestic hot water return systems.
The section will review Building #2 and design the domestic hot water equipment and coordination of spacing requirements.

Michael Danielson, CPD, GPD of Reed, Wells, Benson & Co will be your instructor. Michael has been with RWB since 1996 and is the department head for Plumbing and Fire Protection. He has been the Education Chairman for the ASPE Dallas-Ft. Worth Chapter since 2006. Michael earned his Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering Systems from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1995. He brings with him a wealth of experience in designing plumbing systems in healthcare, municipal, multifamily, and institutional designs.
